About JNCO Objectives
History

The Jordan National Competitiveness Team (JNCT) was established at the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation (MoPIC) in 1997. JNCT was established with a vision of attaining high, rising and sustainable standards of living and a mission of being a leader in building the competitive advantage of Jordan. The JNCT works under a three-pronged framework involving: the creation of a competitive mindset by spreading awareness of the competitiveness concept; the development of a mechanism for change; and the transfer of data into knowledge. JNCT has engaged in three basic functions: studying economic clusters, monitoring Jordan's position in relevant international reports, and supporting the public sector's decision making process. Its work has involved the creation of a micro-level database through studies of various economic sectors and clusters.

The JNCT's work is based on the concept of competitiveness; which at the national level equates to national productivity. The notion of competitiveness goes beyond simply being a function of cheap and abundant labor, or the possession of natural resources, which are comparative advantages. As such, to fully succeed in its work, the JNCT has been working closely with both the public and the private sectors, which play exclusive, yet interrelated, roles in the creation of a competitive economy.

Why the Observatory?

As the dynamic market changes towards globalization, the Competitiveness Observatory provides a vital knowledge- and data- reference base for the Jordanian governmental and business institutions to help realize the ultimate overall micro- and macro- economic competitiveness and prosperity. To sustain the JNCT's efforts it is necessary to create an institutionalized system, which systematically assesses and measures the competitiveness of the Jordanian economy through evaluating the competitiveness of its sectors and the environment in which they operate. Such measures to a large extent exist on the macro-level, but have thus far been absent on the micro-level. The Kingdom's competitive performance is the portal to enhance the country's sustainable development. This is to be accomplished through the creation of a "Competitiveness Observatory."

To this end, the JNCT's role has been expanded to include the implementation of a system to track and assess the Kingdom's competitive performance as a means to enhance the country's sustainable development. This is to be accomplished through the creation of a "Competitiveness Observatory."

Vision and Mission

As globalization is shifting the competitive landscape for Jordan and its productive industries clusters, the Competitiveness Observatory provides a vital knowledge and data reference for the Jordanian government and business institutions to help plan and realize the vision of a competitive and prosperous Jordanian economy.
